The progress I’ve been making with projects like https://lwa.black.af and https://fortress.black.af are giving me more hope in seeing what I’d like to for the IndieWeb. I really want to build stuff that I can gladly show to friends and help them join as well. That’s part of the reason why I joined Glitch, in a way, the company’s attempting to bring back view source
to the Web. I want to help bring back the actual social nature of it as well.
That’s a ramble, though. I have some ambitions that I want to close the year out with. I’ll try to keep them list friendly.
## Koype Disassembled
This site is running on Koype, an app I wrote to get my feet wet with IndieWeb ideologies and approaches. I feel like it’s really cobbled together and I’m still learning how to make it work in a way that I rely on. So far, it’s been good. But I’ve hit an obvious wall. There’s random bugs that I haven’t spent enough time on (rendering events for one) that I’d like to fix. My focus has been towards making Koype more flexible - allowing people to bring what they’d like instead of having to be locked into what it provides. This involves a lot of things like:
- swapping out endpoints for Micropub around media storage
- adjusting where posts are stored (be it on disk or to remote storage)
- remote settings adjustments (so provision of a site can be done by Koype Hub)
- authorization of posts
- custom pages
Each day I work on this, I keep reminding myself that I’m slowly building a content management system for social interactions. And it’s not a bad thing. It’s just something to be aware of.
## Multi Factor for All
I like the idea of sending control over what things can do with relation to me back to me. We’ve grown very accustomed to just implicitly trusting everything which is proving time and time again to be a bad idea. Aaron has this baked into his site and having worked at Clef, I’m really into the idea of making this a first-class feature in more IndieWeb sites. Fortress is going to have this support for authorization in the near future (perhaps before IWC SF 2019 if I can hustle). I probably won’t have enough time to completely refactor out the authorization logic in Koype to demonstrate self-sign in but it’ll be enough for someone just getting into the IndieWeb with a static site or something of that nature to get going.
## Events
The one word that can send shivers down the spine of anyone who’s attempted to organize a group of people together. I’m still working on the design phase and cribbing a lot of prior art for this project, but hopefully next year, I should have a IndieWeb-centric event management platform that serves as a commons for events held on there. It’ll be super simple and leverage a lot of my existing tooling for IndieWeb stuff like Fortress and another upcoming project to handle outside communications.
I’m generally excited for the end of the year when it comes to IndieWeb stuff. Is anyone else working on something exciting they’d like to share? I’d love to hear about it!
